Basic Poker Rules
If you are new to Poker, you have to get familiar with its two types – Draw Poker and Stud Poker. These games are almost identical to each other.
You will be dealt five cards after which a betting round continues. The rest of the players have to get a better hand by trading their three cards for new cards from the deck. If you get an Ace by chance, you can trade all your four cards as per your requirement.
In this variant the players are also dealt with five cards, In some games, seven cards are dealt. After assessing the strength of their hands, the players accordingly wager their chips. If you bid the most chips in the game, then you win the round unless and until someone else has matched your bet. To determine the winner, both you and the other player have to show their hands. The player with the best hand wins the round.
After the cards are dealt in a game of Poker, every player from the left of the dealer can do the following four options:
If you get a good hand or want the other payers to think that you have a good hand, you can increase the wager.
If you do not have a good hand or do not want to increase the wager with your existing hand, you can fold and lay down your cards. You won’t lose any more chips in this process.
After a player has raised his stakes, the other players can choose to raise or fold or call – equaling the wagering amount of the first player who raised.
If no one raises their wager for the game to continue, the player can choose to do nothing or pass his betting option to the next player.
The aim of the game is to get the best five-card Poker hand possible through combinations and card values. The better hands are much more difficult to achieve and this hierarchy of hands is more or less the same for every Poker variant out there.
Card values and rankings
Most of the beginners make the common mistake of not memorizing the Poker hand values. Don’t be that person! If you understand the basic principles of betting and the values of a hand, then, playing Poker will be relatively easy for you. All you have to do is memorize the different combinations of Poker form, five of a kind to no pair and you will be good to go!
The individual cards are ranked from the best to the worst.
The Ace is considered as the most valuable card. From there, the descending card values are as follows: King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Let’s check out the combination card values in detail.
Five of a Kind
This hand is only possible in games where there is at least one card such as four deuces, joker or the two one-eyed jacks, This is the highest possible hand.
When there are no wild cards and a standard deck of card is used, this is the highest possible hand. In this combination, the five cards such as 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 of hearts should be of the same suit in sequence. The highest straight flush is also known as a royal straight flush or royal flush and contains A, K, Q, J, and 10 of one suit.
Four of a Kind
This combination ranks after Straight flush. An example of Four of a Kind is four 3s. The fifth card can be anything.
In this combination, the player should have three similar cards and a pair of another set of cards.
This combination includes five cards of the same suit. If two players have flush, the person with the highest hand wins.
A straight combination is refereed to five cards of progressive ranks.
Three of a Kind
In this combination, the player needs to have three cards of the same rank and the other two cards can be of different ranks.
Here, you need to have two pair of cards of two different ranks.
Two Poker cards need to have the same value to qualify as this combination.
This is the most common combination. If no players get a combination, then the hands are rated by the highest card of every hand.
